Day 2

Windhoek - Waterberg Wilderness Lodge / Travel time approx. 3 hours - 300 km

After breakfast we start on our Namibia round-trip from Windhoek via Okahandja to the Waterberg Plateau Park. We arrive at the beautiful "Waterberg Wilderness Lodge" quite early and can therefore, after a short lunch break, take a walk in the bush (for the very active people) or go on the ever popular "Rhino Game Drive". With a bit of luck, we can already see rhino and various antelope species. Accommodation, breakfast and dinner in the lodge.

Day 3

Wilderness Lodge - Mokuti Etosha Lodge / Travel time approx. 4 hours - 350 km

After breakfast, drive over Otjiwarongo, Otavi and Tsumeb to the north entrance (Lindequist Gate) of the Etosha National Park and reach our next destination the "Mokuti Etosha Lodge", which is the closest lodge before the entrance of the park The lodge is located on its own 4000 hectare private property. After the lunch break we will go on a 4 - 5 hour long 'Game Drive' where we most certainly will see some of the "Big Five" among many other animal species. Accommodation, breakfast and dinner in the lodge.

Day 4

Mokuti Etosha Lodge - Taleni Etosha Village / Travel time approx. 4 hours - 165 km

Today is a very interesting day, because we leave early after breakfast and drive through the park in a westerly direction to reach around noon the "Halali Camp" for a short lunch break. We will pass some more waterholes before leaving the park through the "Andersson Gate" and arriving at the beautifully located "Taleni Etosha Village" in the late afternoon. Without a doubt, we will still experience a lot on this trip. This is a pretty dusty ride and we can not drive faster than 60 km per hour in the park. However, there is now the possibility to refresh yourself in one of the two pools offered by the lodge. We enjoy our dinner with a very extensive buffet with many game dishes before we go to sleep.

Day 5

Taleni Etosha Village - Hobatere Lodge / Travel time approx. 5 hours - 210 km

This morning after breakfast we drive back to the Etosha Park to continue our yesterday's game drive in a westerly direction. Several waterholes are available to us on this way for further game viewing. For sure, at the Olifantsrus Camp, with a magnificent lookout point over the waterhole, we will get a lot of animals into the photo lens. After about another 60 kilometers we leave the park through the "Galton Gate" and drive a few more kilometers to reach the beautiful "Hobatere Lodge" at noon. This stunning property is set in a concession area of 32,000 hectares housing a large number of wildlife including lions, leopards, oryx, eland, cheetahs, giraffes, Hartmann's mountain zebras and elephants. The afternoon is free for you to participate in the activities offered by the lodge or to relax at the swimming pool. Accommodation, breakfast and dinner here again at the lodge.

Day 6

Hobatere Lodge - Epupa Camp / Travel time approximately 6 hours - 350 km

After a delicious breakfast on the lodge's terrace overlooking the waterhole, we say goodbye to the animals, as we are now heading for my long home "Kunene". About 170 km of paved road through a beautiful landscape until we stop in Opuwo, make lunch break at Annette's coffee shop, refuel and continue driving in the most beautiful part of Nambia. 180 km of gravel road into a mountainous landscape via Okongwati to the Epupa Falls. Many Himbas along the road will recognize me and welcome us. We are very welcome here. Arrival at 14h00 at the "Epupa Camp". For the afternoon, a "Sundowner" on the hill above the waterfalls is provided otherwise leisure. Overnight at the camp with breakfast and dinner included in the price of the trip.

Day 7

Epupa Camp

Breakfast on the terrace of the camp directly on the Kunene river. At 8h00 we leave and go on a sensational "Himba Drive" ( see my guest book). Here we learn all about the culture, history and traditions of these unique people who settled here at the end of the fifteenth century and whose world is almost untouched and in order. We also visit a cemetery of the Himbas and the elementary school of Epupa. The afternoon is free but highly recommended is the "River Rafting" on the Kunene River (also suitable for absolute beginners) or a visit to my friend Koos Verwey at his "Epupa Lodge" for a "sundowner" on the wooden deck next to the waterfalls. Overnight again at the Epupa camp with breakfast and dinner included..

Day 8

Epupa Camp - Khowarib Lodge / Travel time approximately 6 hours - 320 km

We leave Epupa after breakfast and continue on our Namibia tour to Opuwo where we have to refuel again and take the C 43 road which leads us over the magnificent "Joubert Pass" to Sesfontein. After another 25 kilometers, we reach the uniquely beautifully situated "Khowarib Lodge", which lies in the Khowarib Gorge and serves as a stopover on the way to the "Vingerklip Lodge". The afternoon is at your disposal, but I would recommend that we pay the "Ongongo Waterfall" near Warmquelle a short visit. Accommodation, breakfast and a wonderful dinner on the terrace of the lodge included in the price of the trip.

Day 9

Khowarib Lodge - Vingerklip Lodge / Travel time approximately 6 hours - 300 km

After breakfast departure for Twyfelfontein where we will visit the world famous "UNESCO World Heritage Site" in Twyfelfontein after about 220 km this morning. Here is a guided walk of about 2 hours with a local guide provided where we can admire the more than 2000 years old rock engravings of the bushmen who once lived here. After a short lunch break then continue to the "Vingerklip Lodge", which is located on a beautiful mountain terrace overlooking the equally famous Vingerklip rock. If you want, you can go for a walk on marked trails directly to the rock here in the afternoon. Overnight, breakfast and dinner at the lodge.

Day 10

Vingerklip Lodge - The Stiltz Swakopmund / Travel time approx. 6 hours - 350 km

We leave after breakfast to reach our next destination, Swakopmund. Today we travel the entire route over sand or gravel road via Khorixas and the mining village Uis to the coast, where we arrive after about 5 hours in Henties Bay. Here we can already get our first taste of the cold Atlantic Ocean on the beautiful clean beach and drive after a short break on to our destination the beautiful lodge "The Stiltz" in Swakopmund located directly on the beach. We will have plenty of time to explore the city in the afternoon, which has many great shops, walking the beach or visiting the Museum and the Namibian National Marine Aquarium. Overnight and breakfast at the lodge. Recommendation: Dinner in the "Brauhaus" or in the popular "Kücki's Pub".

Day 11

Swakopmund

After breakfast we have the whole day to relax in Swakopmund. But as often requested, we will start early to come to Walfish Bay to take part in the very popular catamaran tour, which starts at 9h00 and ends at 12h30. This goes along the coast, and sea lions as well as dolphins are constant companions of the boat. Fresh oysters and sparkling wine are served. Back at Walfish Bay we may make a small lunch break before returning to Swakopmund in the afternoon and have the opportunity to pay a visit to the old castle Nonidas, as well as the lunar landscape. Here we also have the opportunity to examine the hundreds of years old Welwitschia Mirabilis plant. We should be back in Swakopmund around 18h00 and can refresh ourselves to enjoy our dinner in one of the very good restaurants, like "Western Saloon" (German cuisine) very comfortable or in the Landmark "Jetty 1905" Restauant which is about 270 meters on the Jetty in the ocean.

Day 12

Swakopmund - Windhoek / Travel time approximately 5  hours - 480 km

This morning after breakfast we drive back to Windhoek via Usakos, Karibib and Okahandja, but make a detour to the left about 25 kilometers before Usakos to pay a visit to Spitzkoppe. Here we see again rock paintings of the people who lived here hundreds of years ago. We continue via Karibib to Okahandja and a last chance to visit the largest woodcarving market in Namibia and then continue our drive to Windhoek. Maybe even more time in Windhoek for last souvenir purchases and a farewell drink on the terrace of the Hotel Heinitzburg. Now it will be time to drive to the Hosea Kutako airport, so that you can start your return flight in time and thus our beautiful 12-day Namibia North tour ends.

Remarks

The self-driver option requires a valid driving license plus a valid International driving license.

Also recommendable is a health insurance which also covers you abroad.

* Different airlines now fly to Windhoek and the flight prices have drastically declined. It is recommended to go 'google' a bit and to look for carriers such as Air Namibia, Condor, KLM and SAA. Especially Eurowings and Quatar Airways are worth to consider.

Namibia is as large as Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Northern Italy, but with only two inhabitants per square kilometer it has fewer inhabitants than Hamburg.

These facts alone suggest a sparsely settled population and large distances.

In Namibia, there is left-hand traffic. We travel up to 500 km on this tour on some days, which is not a problem at all in view of the low traffic volume. It is important to note that about 85% of the road network in the host country is not paved, but rather so-called "gravelroads" ( dirt roads ), which can be used by conventional cars.

Based on our route of approx. 4100 km, about one half are normal tar and the other half gravel or sand roads.

Our tour includes accommodation and breakfast or half board. Additional costs eg for dinner are rather insignificant, because in Namibia most menus are reasonably priced in comparison to other countries.
